BAKING SODA – less than $1 a kilo

Don’t be ripped off. We use baking soda for just about everything cleaning around the house and for personal hygiene. Baking soda has replaced toothpaste, shampoo, deodorant and soap in our bathroom as well as being used as an all surface cleaner and odour eater. Bulk stores like Bin Inn are a good option for smaller amounts of Baking soda, fill your own container for around $2-20 a kg. However if like us you want to enjoy the huge savings using heaps of baking soda brings, get it from a Rural Supplies store. I just got a 25kg bag of bi-Carbonate soda (baking Soda) from RD1 Waihi for $24-00. Less than $1 a kilo. That will last us for a year and we will not be buying soap, shampoo, toothpaste and deodorant to name just a few. It is good for our skin, chemical free and cheap. What a winner. It’s empowering how much saving can be achieved with a little bit of knowledge. I sell Baking Soda books on this website for only $20 which will give you the knowledge you needs to learn how to save heaps using baking soda. And by the way it is also kinder to the planet. Go figure!!!!!

  5. Hi! I looked on the RD1 website (now farm source?) and can’t find any baking soda 🙁 any ideas where you can buy it in bulk now? I live in Auckland. Thanks 🙂

    • Hi Monique – did you look up Bi-carbonate soda? Farm Source definitely have it. Bin Inn too but its more expensive. Thanks Lyn.

  6. Hi. I’m all for cheap but do you know the sources of the baking soda you buy? I’m reluctant to buy from Farm source due to their affiliation with Fonterra which is a huge importer of non sustainable palm kernels (amongst other things). Is there any ethical worries about sources?

    • Hi Celia – I am a Fonterra supplier (sharemilker). Its really a conundrum striving to be ethical without becoming hypocritical. Most of the products in the supermarket contain palm oil – I try and avoid these products and it is actually relatively easy to do so. Palm Kernel expellor meal is a waste product of these manufactured consumer products and can be fed to dairy cattle to produce nutrition for humans. Otherwise it would be dumped at sea. Animal feed is a by-product of the palm oil industry, not the main event. So I concentrate on my own personal choices ie: what products I consume. It is really a hard one – agriculture brings $100,000 a minute into the NZ economy. I struggle to think of a better alternative environmentally – everything has its impact, agricultural emissions are more natural than most other industries especially the way farming is done in NZ. Fonterra is NZs biggest company and dairy farming in NZ has been very successful over the generations, hence it has risen to the top of the list as an emitter and become a target for many. Its a huge and complex subject and one which I think about constantly… it is difficult to identify the perfect ethical choice??? Thank you for your feedback Lyn http://www.pigtitsandparsleysuace.co.nz
